Description
Seismic refraction survey has a long history in order to obtain the subsurface structures and velocity distributions. Among the many methods proposed to analyze the refraction survey data, the Hagiwara's Method (the reciprocal method) is the most popular and well adopted method. However, the analyzed quality of the reciprocal and most other methods highly depends on the first arrival times picked at first stage. In this paper, we discuss a method for imaging refraction interfaces by using convolution method that does not require picking of first break times. We use the properties of convolution and correlation operations such as the convolution becomes summation of time delays and correlation becomes subtraction of time delays in the case of two pulses. Using these properties, the reciprocal method can be performed by convolution of the initial arrival portion of the forward and reverse profile traces of refraction survey. Since the picked values of the first arrival times control the quality of analyzed results in refraction survey, picking is not the mindless job, and the re-picking is often demanded in analytical stage. On the other hand, the advantage of convolution method is that picking the first arrival is not required. In addition, it became possible to discuss the data quality in detail, based on the convolved result. In the present study, we actually adopted to analyze data by the convolution method. As a result, above mentioned merits of proposed method were confirmed.<br>
