Abstract

In the right combination of circumstances, remarkably accurate age determinations are possible by (1) averaging multiple assays of samples obtained from the same provenance or (2) wiggle-matching in radiocarbon dating using high-precision radiocarbon calibration curves. This is indicated by results of the dating projects conducted by the author in the American Southwest and western Japan. Also, the feasibility of single-year wiggle-matching using stable isotope ratios of carbon and/or oxygen is mentioned as a potential means for solving problems associated with the decadal 14C wiggle-matching.
