Abstract

Under the framework of the“Kanagawa Environmental Plan”, Maps for Avoiding Disaster-Prone Areas have been published by Kanagawa Prefecture. The map for each area shows (1) areas previously affected by flooding, landslide or debris flow, (2) dangerously low areas, (3) areas likely to be hit by slope failure, landslide or debris flow, and (4) areas likely to be hit by earth liquefaction or tsunami inundation associated with the occurrence of earthquakes. Maps on a scale of 1:10, 000 with an explanatory text have been prepared for all cities, towns and villages in Kanagawa Prefecture. Local governments hope that residents provided with this information will avoid disaster-prone areas for housing construction and take other measures for prevention and mitigation of natural disasters.<br>Recently, a new series of Map for Avoiding Disaster-Prone Areas has been published. This map includes the result of risk assessment of (1) flooding from rivers, (2) inundation by high tide, (3) slope failure, and (4) debris flow. The map is also intended to guide residents in measures for safe land use on the basis of this information.
