This paper describes a method of designing the assembly to control the pressurizing condition for explosive welding using an underwater shock wave. In this method, a high explosive was kept inclined at a certain angle so as to decrease the horizontal collision point velocity as a means to satisfy one of the important parameters. The use of such an inclined assembly makes the welding conditions vary with horizontal position when using a constant-thickness explosive. The use of an explosive with increased thickness toward the detonation direction is proposed, which improves the uniformity of the pressurizing condition along the horizontal position. The underwater shock pressure values for these two cases are numerically simulated and compared with the experimental results. Both the numerical and experimental results showed the improvement of the pressurizing condition employing the assembly with the increased-thickness explosive.
