Abstract

The latent heat of solidification plays an important part in the analysis of metal flow and solidification. In this research, the effects of Si content on the latent heat of Al-Si alloy were measured and analyzed with a mixture rule of thermodynamics. The distribution pattern of the measured latent heat coincided well with that of the solid phase crystalization rate calculated from the Al-Si phase diagram. The latent heat depending on the Si content varied largely from 313kJ/kg to 520kJ/kg. The maximum value of the latent heat, 520kJ/kg was obtained at 12.6mass%Si, 31% greater than that of pure aluminum which is 398kJ/kg. Finally, a bi-linear approximate formula for calculating the effects of Si content on the latent heat was proposed.
