  Studies on the relation between structure and magnetic properties of austempered ductile iron were carried out. Ductile irons added with a small amount of Cu and Mo were austenitized at temperatures from 850° to 950°C and austempered at temperatures from 300° to 400°C. Segregation ratios of Mo, Mn and C in eutectic cell boundaries were larger than unity, while those of Si and Cu were less than unity. Increasing the austenitizing temperature and time promoted the segregation ratios of the elements of the both groups to approach unity. When ductile irons were austempered at about 350°C for 1 to 10 hours, the austenite phase was retained in a large quantity. Their saturation magnetization decreased with increasing percentage of retained austenite. Lower bainitic structure was formed during austempering at 300°C and upper bainitic structure during austempering at 350° to 400°C. Movement of magnetic domain walls was restrained by the fine dispersed carbides in the lower bainitic structure. Coercivity of the austempered ductile iron was 60 to 70 Oe. in the lower bainitic structure and 30 to 40 Oe. in the upper bainitic structure. Measurement of the magnetic properties of austempered ductile iron may be used for estimating the structure without destructive testing.
