Abstract

When recycled foundry sand heats by 10°C or more above room temperature, the mold strength decreases and stickiness to a pattern becomes serious. Although air blowing or water spraying is usually applied for cooling such hot sand, sufficient cooling rate is achieved not to easily especially in summer. Such refrigerants as liquid nitrogen and solid carbon dioxide were mixed in hot sand. The sand rapidly cools. The suitable mixing ratio of refrigerants depends on the temperature of sand. Troublesome problems, fragility of mold and stickiness to a pattern, are moderated by the use of the foundry sand cooled with refrigerants.
