Abstract

The foamability of recycled alloys such as ADC6 (Al-0.27Si-3.11Mg), AC2A (Al-5.51Si-3.94Cu) and ADC12 (Al-11.2Si-1.8Cu) were investigated by a gas foaming process. The high Mg-content alloy (ADC6) took a considerably short time for viscosity to rise due to accelerated oxdiation of the melt. In addition, the AC2A alloy with a larger mushy zone (i. e. , larger liquidus-solidus difference) required a long time to promote the growth of the foam in the liquid-solid region. The high Fe-content alloy such as ADC12 alloy, easily forms solidification cracks due to the formation of Al-Fe-Si intermetallic compound. This problem was solved by controlling the solidification rate of the foaming process.
