Abstract

A vacuum die casting process, in which molten metal is sucked into an evacuated plunger sleeve via a pouring valve, has been applied to aluminum alloy. A popet type pouring valve has attained a vacuum of 1 kPa at the moment of metal injection. The properties of cast metals are compared with those produced by a conventional die casting process, having revealed that : (1) a high vacuum at injection makes the porosity finer in spite of difficulty in reducing total amount of porosity, and (2) gives finer microscopic structures and harder surfaces of metals owing to better contact of metal with mold, (3) giving better mechanical properties due merely to the elimination of solidified metal in the sleeve.
