  Recently, demands for high power and highly functional casting engine parts are growing increasingly stronger to resolve environmental problems (exhaust emissions regulations). The required qualities of each part are also becoming severe. In this study, the thermal shock of cast iron was evaluated using a test piece of the constructed simulating the explosion side of the cylinder head. The reinforcement method of the cylinder head was examined by clarifying the effects of graphite and matrix on the thermal shock properties of cast iron. The results showed that cracks due to the thermal shock of cast iron are caused by the concentrated stress generated from the graphite shape, and this was seen around the interface of graphite and matrix. Adjoining cracks were then found to connect into one progress to the matrix, and be destroyed.
