Abstract

Cosiderable studies have been conducted on the prevention of chunky graphite formation, but only a few on the formation mechanism. The forming stage of chunky graphite was thus studied using a test block obtained by simulating the solidification of heavy-walled ductile casting. The test block was made by pouring into a mold maintained around the eutectic temperature and kept at various periods of time at the eutectic temperature, and then cooled down by air cooling. The results of the study confirmed the following. (1) The chunky graphite formed at the last stage of eutectic solidification. (2) The chunky graphite formed in the eutectic cell formed at the last stage of solidification, or inter-eutectic cell sites or inter-austenitic dendrite sites which solidified in the last stage of solidification. The formation mechanism of chunky graphite was discussed accoding to the results of this study.
