In order to clarify the quenching crack phenomenon in cast steel, a disk shaped low alloy cast steel specimen with an opening was quenched in water at 1123 K. The behavior of quenching crack was checked by microstructure observation and analyzed by heat treatment simulation. The results obtained were as follows. (1) With the specimen with 70 mm thickness used in this experiment, the quenching crack occured at least at 40 s after water quenching. (2) The stress generating the quenching crack decreased as the specimen thickness decreased. When the specimen thickness was less than a constant value, the stress decreased below a critical stress value for the crack generation. (3) Cracking position in the specimen was not influenced by the specimen thickness, but it may be influenced by the specimen shape. (4) According to the results in the heat treatment simulation, the quenching crack was found to occur when a principal stress due to martensitic transformation exceeded the high temperature tensile strength of the cast steel. (5) The heat treatment simulation was useful for predicting the crack generation time and crack generation position in the specimen.
