Abstract

Spheroidal graphite cast iron gives higher tensile strength and hardness comparing with flake graphite cast iron, and if it shows ferrite matrix, ductility may by much higher.
It is suggested that both tensile strength and ductility can be detected from the micro-Vickers hardness test of the matrix or Rockwell and Brinell hardness tests of the cast iron. Therefore the cast irons which were varied the silicon per cent have been subjected to some hardness tests before and after the magnesium treatment.
Spheroidal graphite cast iron increases in hardness by 1.5∼2 times of flake graphite cast iron. (after the magnesium treatment) If both irons have different ferrite structures, these two kinds of ferrite give a similar hardness. The hardness of these irons will mainly be depended upon the distribution and the shapes of graphite.
