Abstract

Feasibility of casting stellite alloy into various tube forms by the vertical OCC process has been investigated. By selecting appropriate casting parameters and mold designs, stellite No. 1 alloy has been successfully continuously cast for the first time into tubes and tubes with internal fins. It was found that the location of the solid-liquid interface was critical in order to obtain the dimensional stability of the cast products. It must be maintained as close as possible to the mold exit (outside the mold) to obtain the identical shapes as defined by the mold. It was also found that an appropriate core design was important to facilitate uniform metal flow into the mold cavity. This metal flow can be further assisted by providing vibrations to the mold before casting. It was further found that the core extension of about 1.5 mm outside the mold was sufficient to avoid the liquid metal flowing into the tube cavity created by the core. The cast structure has been examined. It was found that the products have unidirectional and uniform structures.
