The semisolid forming of blended elemental powders is well suited for intermetallic compounds because of the large forming ability. However, the preforms of blended elemental powders in semi-solid state are readily susceptible to combustion synthesis so that the fluidity is limited. In this paper, the forming limitations of the preforms of blended titanium-aluminum elemental powders (Ti-38 mass % Al) are evaluated using Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA). In addition, optimum conditions of succeeding diffusive alloying for pore-free compacts are discussed.<br>  Results indicate that the synthetical energy degrades for cases of a longer ball-milling time and/or higher preform preparing pressure, causing combustion synthesis to occur earlier. The melting of aluminum during the following alloying heat treatment generates unwanted porosity in the compact. To suppress the porosity, the compact must be kept below the melting point of aluminum before the alloying heat treatment.
