The frozen mold which is fabricated by refrigerating the mixture of sand and water has many advantages including reducing environmental loads and improving the working environment such as noise, vibration, dust, and foul odor. Furthermore, it is known that the fluidity of melt is improved in the frozen mold. However, the mechanism of fluidity improvement has not been clarified yet. In this study, the effects of the water content of molds and initial mold temperature on the fluidity of AC4CH aluminum alloy cast in a frozen mold were investigated. The flow length of the aluminum alloy decreased with increasing mold water content and mold temperature. There was no clear correlation between flow speed and flow length. In contrast, clear correlation was seen between the cooling behavior of melt and flow length. That is, the cooling rate of melt which was flowing in the cavity decreased with decreasing mold water content and initial mold temperature. In addition, the time taken for mold surface temperature to become 373K (boiling temperature of water) increased with decreasing mold water content and initial mold temperature. These results suggest that the fluidity of melt cast in the frozen mold is influenced by the time taken to generate vapor from the mold.
