Abstract

Manufacturing of aluminum alloy ingot has been generally used by continuous casting. However, this casting method involves specific problems, including the occurrence of metallic icicles. In this study, we optimized the shape of distributor nozzle by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation and a multi-objective optimization method based on a genetic algorithm for preventing occurrence of metallic icicle. The design model of nozzle was defined as the shape in which the tip was flatly cut off. For the evaluation of the shape of nozzle, we proposed two objective functions that calculate the horizontality of the cut flat part of the nozzle tip when the outflow completes and the outflow flow rate from the nozzle right before the pouring is completed. Eventually, the effectiveness of the optimized shape was demonstrated through experiments with actual casting device.
