Description
This paper describes an optimization method for the shape and arrangement of cooling channels with thermal simulation. In this method, we focused on the surface temperature of a mould and used the concept of excessive heat generated by the difference from reference temperature. The excessive heat represents the quantity of heat which should be cooled by the cooling channel. Taking that this value and storage positions can be used for deciding the shape and arrangement of cooling channels, we positioned the excessive heat in the mould and substituted the mould area with a cooling channel according to the excessive heat threshold. We defined the total average of temperature deviation at the mould surface as an objective function and updated the shape and arrangement of the cooling channel to minimize the objective function. <br> In order to confirm the validity of this method, we attempted 2D simulation with a hook-shaped cavity. We calculated the shape and arrangement of the cooling channel by this method and confirmed that temperature deviation becomes smaller. <br> We also conducted experiments on a pseudo model to confirm the validity of this method. Taking the test piece to be a part of the mould, we substituted the casting product which heats up the mould surface with a burner. We obtained the optimum shape and arrangement of the cooling channel through simulation and built the test piece based on the simulation results. The temperature deviation at the measuring points of this experiment was small and the performance of the cooling channel was good.
