Abstract

Studies were carried out on the preparation of a new chemical pulp from Sugi (Cryptomeria japonica) by hydrogen peroxide-alkali (PA) process.
The cooking liquor was a mixture of water, hydrogen peroxide, sodium hydroxide (as H2O23% and Na2O 20% based on dry matter) and small quantities of auxiliaries (EDTA 0.3%, anthraquinone : AQ 0.03-3%), the liquor ratio of the mixture to Sugi chips being 5 l/kg.
Hydrogen peroxide alkaline pulp (PAP : total yied of 44-57%, rejects 0.725% and screened 26-45%) was easily obtained from Sugi chips after cooking for 1.5 hours at 170°C.
The addition of AQ into PA cooking liquor gives the two effects of increasing yield and accelating of delignification.
The analyses of unbleached pulp (Ce UPAP) were kappa no. 52-115, Klason lignin 7 -17 %, pentosan 6.58.0% and whiteness 20-24 Hunter. UPAP 107 (Total yield 44.3%, rejects 0.7%, screened 43.6%, kappa no. 51.8) has folding endurance 410, at. 500 ml C. S. F.
Ce UPAP 107 could be bleached to whiteness 62 Hunter by one stage bleaching with hypochlorite.
