抄録

Nowadays, process instrumentation systems face two major environmental impacts.<BR>One is open system architecture from technological side, and the other is increased requirement of more effective process operation from worldwide-based economic side.<BR>From the above view points, the author starts with historical review of process instrumentation in Japan from after WW II, discusses roles of instrumentation engineers both in user's site and vendor's site and their relationship/responsibility, and introduces current technological trend including impact of open system architecture on process instrumentation.<BR>Furthermore, the author advises crucial subjects which instrumentation engineers must study, and proposes reorganization of university/collage curriculum to meet these technological and economic trends.
