Abstract

The Smelt Fractionating Process is composed of smelt solution causticizing stage and crystallizing stage of the causticized liquor. We conducted experiments to investigate both the effect of NaCl on causticity and the behavior of components such as NaCl and Na2CO3 in caustized liquor. We then performed a pilot plant test to get engineering data for the Smelt Fractionating Process.
The results of these experiments can be summarized as follows.
1) NaCl does not actully affect causticity in this process.
2) The material balance of this process can be calculated by using a phase diagram and the calculated values agree well with the pilot plant test results.
3) Data for the design and the operatioal conditions of equipment for crystallizing are obtained and it is confirmed that separated NaCl is pure enough for use in the electrolysis necessary to recover chemicals for pulping.
