Description

Cationic derivatives (C-PAM) of polyacrylamide (PAM), which contained various amine units, were prepared by the application of the Hofmann degradation in oder to enlarge the scope of its possible uses in pulp and paper industry. The Hofmann degradation of PAM was found to proceed easily even at 0°C, while that of other amides was practically difficult to occur without warming. The reaction at a low temperature was extremely advantageous as holding to a minimum the carboxyl groups formed by the hydrolysis of amide groups. C-PAM containing the amine units of 5 to 60 mol % and the residual amide units of 75 to 0 mol % were obtained when sodium hypochlorite and sodium hydroxide of 10 to 100 mol % of theoretical amounts (CONH2 : NaOCl : NaOH=1: 1: 2)were applied to amide groups at the temperature below 10°C. Carboxyl groups formed during these reactions were only 4 to 6 mol %.
