Three possible sources for the negative serial dependence seen in nonrenewal neural spike trains are examined in this paper. The location shift, scale change and shape parameter change with the conditioning interval in the conditional mean plot produce distinguishable conditional statistics. The method is presented via a simple analytic example, a simulation study, and with cat auditory nerve data. The method is an analog of whitening procedures used in time series modeling.
