Abstract

TAPPI Test Method T 249cm-85 for carbohydrate analysis of wood pulp requires alditol acetate derivertization involving a series of evaporation steps. This paper aims to establish a simple and reliable analytical method improving the conventional procedure.
LC-ELSD (Liquid Chromatography-Evaporative Light Scattering Detector) method is capable to separate among mono-, di-saccharides: sucrose, glucose, xylose, arabinose, galactose, mannose and myo-inositol (internal standard) on liquid chromatogram completely. Comparing to the Alditol acetate method, the analytical values of wood and pulps in LC-ELSD provide the similar results in Alditol acetate method, except higher glucose, lower xylose and mannose, and lower total polysaccharide contents.
This method has a feature completing the procedure within 3 hours including sample hydrolysis and HPLC analysis.
