Abstract

The AIBN-initiated radical polymerization of vinyl monomers in the presence of nitrosobenzene in benzene was carried out at 60°C. Inhibition effect of nitrosobenzene was studied on the basis of the abilities for radical scavenger and the reactivity with monomer.
Methyl acrylate and vinyl acetate were recognized to have little reactivity with nitrosobenzene and the rate of disappearance of nitrosobenzene calculated from the inhibition time agreed with that from the direct reaction between nitrosobenzene and AIBN. The rate of polymerization after inhibition time was normal for methyl acrylate but reduced appreciably for vinyl acetate.
In the low monomer concentration acrylonitrile gave a inhibition time near to that of theoretical value in spite of its slight reactivity to nitrosobenzene, but in the high concentration this relation was not observed.
Methyl methacrylate showed the great reactivity with nitrosobenzene and the inhibition time was remarkably shorter that the theoretical value.
