Description

Triphenylmethyl acrylate (I) and acryl bromide (II) were synthesized and polymerized using benzoyl peroxide as an intiator. The obtained polymers were hydrolysed to polyacrylic acid (PAA). PAA's derived from poly- (II) showed nearly the same potentiometric and conductometric titration curves as those of usual PAA's, but the titration curves of PAA derived from poly- (I) were remarkably different from those of usual PAA's, nearly the same as those of special PAA obtained by radical polymerization of acrylic acid in dilute aqueous solution of pH 7. PAA derived from poly- (I) seems to have a similar tacticity as that of the special PAA, this may be attributed to large steric hindrance of side chain of monomer (I) at polymerization.<BR>As the other series of experiments, p-vinyl benzoic acid was also synthesized and polymerized with radical initiators in various solvents. The polymers (PVBA) polymerized in dilute aqueous solutions of pH 7 showed different infrared absorption spectra, potentiometric and conductometric titration curves and viscosity-neutralization relations from those of PVBA's polymerized in organic solvents. Furthermore, polyelectrolytic behaviors of PVBA were compared with those of FAA, and effects of structures of polymeric monocarboxylic acids on their polyelectrolytic behaviors were investigated.
