Description

Methyl acrylate polymers of different degrees of polymerization (P) polymethyl acrylates derived from polyacrylic acid and polyacrolein were reduced to polyallyl alcohols and then converted to polyallyl acetates (PAAc). PAAc's of low P were prepared by radical polymerization of allyl acetate and by acetylation of allyl alcohol polymers obtained under different polymerization conditions. Saponification of PAAc's were carried out in an acetone-water (8: 2 by volume) mixture with potassium hydroxide as a catalyst. The initial rate constants of the saponification were dependent on P of PAAc's, but the rate constants at the later stage were almost the same for all PAAc samples. The autocatalytic effect of the saponification of PAAc's was much less than that of saponification of polyvinyl acetate. Some discussions were given for these results.
