Abstract

For those who involved in QCS (Quality Control System) measure paper quality online, measuring the thickness of the web by using caliper sensor had been difficult issue for a long time. Traditionally, critical caliper measurement has been achieved through the use of dual-sided, contacting caliper sensors. This sensor sometimes requires very delicate tuning of contacting pressure or mechanical alignment, and the some result of them did not satisfy us. Therefore, recently paper makers have been asking for a new type of caliper measurement, which overcomes the weaknesses of contacting caliper. On that occasion, Yokogawa, one of the QCS makers released optical caliper sensor. The measurement is based on a combination of two techniques chromatic aberration and confocal displacement and adopt unique non-contacting (one side light-touch) design less caliper-related defects than existing one.<BR>This report presents the outline and the results of introducing optical caliper sensor which we introduced into Ishinomaki mill N 6.
