Abstract

Ethyl-, n-propyl-, i-propyl and n-butyl vinyl maleates and fumarates were synthesised bythe vinyl interchange reaction of vinyl acetate with mono alky maleates, and the physicalproperties of these compounds were determined.<BR>With radical initiator, the highest rate of polymerization was obtained with the i-propylester.<BR>Percent cyclization of the polymerization products was measured by infrared spectroscopy.<BR>The poly maleates showed high 4-membered ring contents and lower 5-membered ring contents.In poly fumarates only a small amount of 5-membered ring was found to be formed.<BR>The observed difference in cyclization behavior in the two series of polymer was discussed.
