説明

The graftpolymerization of N-vinylcarbazole (NVC) onto carbon black surface was carried out by the polymerization of NVC initiated by furnace black at the temperature of 50°C to 70°C in 1, 2-dichloroethane. The apparent activation energy of polymerization was approximately 14 kcal/mol. The molecular weight of homopolymers obtained in the presence of carbon black decreased with an increase in conversion. Pretreatment of carbon black with sodium borohydride decreased the molecular weight of the homopolymer. After Soxhlet extraction of the products with tetrahydrofuran, the amount of grafted poly (N-vinylcarbazole) [poly (NVC)] was determined by micro-Kjeldahl analysis for nitrogen, where the amount of poly (NVC), simply adsorbed on the surface of carbon black, was subtracted from the experimentally determined amount of poly- (NVC) in the products. The graft ratio was found to be increased with an increase in conversion for this grafting process. However, the quantity of poly (NVC) fixed on the substrate surface pretreated with sodium borohydride was negligible. The results showed that the quinone-type oxygens on the surface are responsible for the grafting sites of poly (NVC) cations.
