The hydrogen bonding of EVAL (ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer) has been examined by near-infrared spectra of the film samples. The analysis of the separated components of the absorptions appeared in the wave length range 1.35-1.69 μm has shown that the coefficients of the absorptions increase slightly as the ethylene content in the copolymer increases but are independent of the state of hydrogen bonding. The absorptions at around 1.41, 1.49, and 1.58μm, which are assigned to free, intra-and intermolecular hydrogen bonding, were separated and measured. The ratio of intra-to intermolecular hydrogen bonding is 1: 1 for ordinary poly (vinyl alcohol) and this ratio increases slightly as the ethylene content increases. A plot of the quantity of free hydroxyl group vs. ethylene content shows a moderate hump at around ethylene content 75%, while intra-and intermolec-ular hydrogen bonding decrease linearly with the increase of ethylene content. The quantities of the free, intraand intermolecular hydrogen bonding become nearly equal at around the ethylene content 75%. The effect of drawing on the hydrogen bonding states is found to be small.
