Shear viscosities for three kinds of hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) solutions were determined as a function of temperature over the wide range of polymer concentration, covering liquid crystalline, biphasic, and isotropic regions. A cone-plate type viscometer was used. The viscosity-temperature curves for dimethylformamide, distilled water, and acetic acid solutions of HPC displayed a minimum and a maximum. The maximum and minimum values of viscosity decreased with increasing polymer concentration, with a few exceptions. The viscosity of a single phase (isotropic or anisotropic) solution at a given temperature increased with increasing polymer concentration. The concentration-temperature superposition for the viscosity was successfully applied to all the systems in this study.
