Abstract

The quantitative analysis of the thermal degradation products of polycarbonate (PC) was conducted, aided by the thermal degradation of diphenyl carbonate (DPC) as a similar model compound. Little is known about the accurate amount of lower volatile products such as carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CD) in the scission products, whereas several studies have been reported for the thermal degradation of PC. In this study, the thermal degradation of PC was quantitatively analyzed by the same method as had been examined with DPC. Method to separate coalesced peaks in a mass spectrum and the atomic or structural ratio restrictions to confirm the accuracy of analysis were designed and applied. As a result of thermal degradation of PC, methane, water, CO and CD were measured more accurately by using the separation method than by conventional methods.
