Description

Salt effects on the acid-catalyzed condensation (formation of the methylene linkage) of di- and trimethylolmalamine (I and II, respectively) have been studied. In the followings the molar ratio [H+] 0/ [M2F] 0 or [M3F] 0 is represented by S. (1) For the condensation in an aqueous medium, in a region 0<S<1, the effects were not observed for I and II. In a region S>1, the effects for I were positive, whereas no effects were observed for II. (2) For the condensation in an aqueous-dimethylsulfoxide medium (7/8 and 1/2, volume ratio), no effects were observed for I in the regions 0<S<1 and S>1. (3) For the hydrolysis of I and II in the regions 0<S<1 and S>1, the effects were scarcely observed both in an aqueous and in an aqueous-dimethyl sulfoxide medium (7/8 and 1/2).
