Contrary to the long-time belief, the present study has demonstrated cationic polymerizations in aqueous media via two different methods. The first one is based on the finding that water-tolerant Lewis acids of lanthanide and related metal triflates, in conjunction with the HCl adduct of a monomer, induce controlled cationic polymerization of styrene derivatives in heterogeneous aqueous systems, where the growing carbocationic species is formed in the organic phase via entrance of a water-soluble Lewis acid from the aqueous phase. The second method is based on BF3OEt2 as another water-tolerant Lewis acid. When coupled with the monomer-water adduct, the boron compound mediates living cationic polymerizations of styrenes even in a homogeneous aqueous solvent, where the C-OH bond is selectively activated by the oxophilic Lewis acid to generate carbocationic species in the aqueous monophase. Furthermore, the C-OH/BF3OEt2 system also induces direct living cationic polymerizations of functional monomers such as unprotected pHS. The author hopes that these novel systems for carbocationic polymerizations will contribute to the progress of ion chemistry as well as to environmentally benign industrial processes.
