The correlation between alcohol permeability and chemical structure of membranes was studied. Eleven different reverse osmosis membranes were prepared from various kinds of polymer materials. They were tested for alcohol separation with C1 to C3 alcohol-water mixtures. The membranes used could be classified into three categories in relation to alcohol separation. The first group of membranes selectively permeated water from aqueous alcohol solution. Eight membranes, such as crosslinked charged membrane, cellulose acetate membrane, and aromatic polyamide membrane, belong to this group. The second group of membranes had no permeability for alcohol. The polyvinylidene fluororide membrane in the third group showed permeability for alcohol, for this membrane, selectivity varied with the molecular size and shape of each alcohol. Permeation rates of alcohols increased with an increase of solubility parameters of the alcohols for the alcohol permselective membranes. Also, selectivity was affected to some extent by the experimental conditions, such as temperature, applied pressure, and concentration.
