Description

A transient change in surface potential was measured for poled poly (vinylidene fluoride) film by applying a small pressure of about 102 Pa in a vacuum vessel under thermal equilibrium condition. The sign of the surface potential corresponds to the polarity of the film. The surface potential change, measured by Kelvin method, was of the order of several hundreds mV, which was much larger than the value expected from the piezoelectric effect under hydrostatic pressure. A definite correlation was recognized between the change in the surface temperature and the surface potential change, which could be interpreted reasonably on the basis of the pyroelectric effect of the film.
