Transport of acetic acid through membranes by using the temperature difference as driving force was studied. This transport is based on the shift of the equilibrium constant between acetic acid and amino group, which depends on temperature. Effects of amino groups and membrane materials on the thermoosmotic flux of acetic acid were investigated. In the case of diethylaminopolystyrene (DEA-PSt) membrane, acetic acid was selectively transported from the cold side to the warm side across the membrane and its concentration in permeate was about 1.5 times larger than in feed solution. These phenomena were interpreted by the transport equations derived from non-equilibrium thermodynamics. A new method was also proposed to evaluate the Soret coefficient, which indicates the efficiency of mass transport under temperature gradient.
