説明

Conventional chlorination is generally used for the protection of drinking water from pollution by micro-organisms. However, the procedure produces trihalomethanes and other toxic materials and moreover is not always effective for inactivation of viruses. In this work, attempts were made to develop a new and reliable method for removal of micro-organisms and viruses from water using functional polymers that capture micro-organisms and viruses in water. Pyridinium-type polymers were found to capture cells of micro-organisms suspended in water. N-Benzylpyridinium bromide and chloride were most effective among pyridinium groups examined. However, hydrophilicity of the polymer matrix was also important for the capture of micro-organisms. Introduction of a hydrophobic component and enhancement of the degree of cross-linking reduced the ability to capture microbial cells. Since regeneration of the polymer that has been used for removing micro-organisms from water is extremely difficult, nonwoven cloth coated with a small amount of a pyridinium-type polymer was developed as a filter material. Filtration of suspensions of micro-organisms through the treated nonwoven cloth effectively removed the microbial cells. The pyridinium-type polymers were also effectively used for the removal of bacteriophage and pathogenic human viruses from water. A water-soluble pyridinium-type polymer showed strong antimicrobial activity. It was found to produce coagulation and sedimentation of microbial cells when added to suspensions of micro-organisms.
