Ring-opening polmerization of ε-caprolactone (ε-CL) onto poly (1, 4-butylene terephthalate) (PBT) was studied. The addition polymerization of ε-CL onto PBT was found to proceed in the presence of carboxyl end groups of PBT as the initiation species. The reaction rate followed the equation of ionic propagation, and the reaction was found to proceed as seen from the equilibrium concentration of the monomers. The equilibrium was attained at 235°C in 120 to 150 min. The ester-exchange reaction during the addition reaction was then studied by using the DSC method, and the results showed that the melting point of the polymer became constant after 90 to 120 min. The block character of the polymers was determined in a short time after the reaction started. Change in the segment length during the polymerization was studied with 13C NMR, and the results coincided with those with the DSC method. These results show that high melting polyester-polyester block copolymer could be obtained by the reaction of PBT with ε-CL.
