In testing for plane bending fatigue in nylon 6 and glass fiber reinforced nylon 6 (notched or smooth) under constant load, the effects of heat treatment (150°C, 10 min) were investigated with regard to fatigue properties such as the S-N relation (stress amplitude and number of cycles) for crack initiation or failure and crack growth properties from the standpoint of the fiber content and its orientation. It was found that heat treatment improves the fatigue properties at the stage of crack initiation and the early stage of crack propagation, but at the later stage of the fatigue process a reverse effect is observed. Namely, under higher stress amplitude, the rate of crack propagation is promoted by increasing the tendency to debond at the interface between the matrix and the fibers. But when the crack propagation is perpendicular to the flow direction, the effect of heat treatment was recognized in all processes and the fatigue life of the specimen was extended by increasing the fiber content.
