IR spectra of two types of homologous oligomers, propylene glycols HO-(-CH (CH3) CH2O-)-nH (n=1, 2, 3, and 6) and ethylene glycols HO-(-CH2CH2O-)-mH (m=1, 2 and 3), were studied to investigate changes of the molecular structure in carbon tetrachloride solution with degree of polymerization of the two oligomers. The two hydroxyl groups in the chain ends and a hydroxyl group and an ether oxygen atom in the oligomer form an inter- or intra-molecular hydrogen bond between them. The wavenumber in the IR spectra of the OH stretching vibration shifts from 3600 cm-1 of free vibration to the lower wavenumber regions according to intra- and inter-molecular hydrogen bonding. The superposed absorption peaks in this region were quantitatively analyzed by a curve resolver. It was concluded that the oligomer chains whose degree of polymerization is more than two form an intramolecularly hydrogen-bonded ring as follows:<BR>Little steric hindrance of the methyl sidegroup of propylene glycols to hydrogen bonding was detected.
