Theories on die-swell for long dies were examined in terms of nonlinear rheology. The recoverable shear in the theories was estimated by the combined use of TYT constitutive equation and the equilibrium relaxation spectrum determined from the stress relaxation after cessation of steady shear flow. The theory of Graessley et al., in which die-swell was attributed to the release of elastic energy stored in the fluid inside a capillary, failed to agree with the experimental results. On the other hand, the theory of Tanner, which was based on the elastic recovery concept of a Poiseuille flow of a BKZ fluid, well predicted the experimental results at low and middle shear rates.
