Description

Popcorn polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) was carried out by using various hydrophilic popcorn polymers; popcorn poly (acrylic acid) (I), popcorn poly (sodium acrylate) (II), and a hydrolysis product of popcorn poly (vinyl acetate) (III). I was synthesized by spontaneous polymerization of the monomer in the presence of 66 mol% of water. II was prepared by neutralization of I with sodium hydroxide. The popcorn poly (vinyl acetate) was synthesized by spontaneous polymerization of the monomer in the presence of varying amounts of ethylene dimethacrylate. The popcorn polymerization of MMA took place in the presence of small amount of water, although was inhibited by excess water. With increasing nonfreezing water content in the hydrophilic popcorn polymer, the amount of the formed popcorn polymer of MMA was increased. It was inferred that the popcorn polymerization of MMA occurring in the hydrophilic popcorn seed proceeded by the graft polymerization mechanism initiated by a hydrophilic popcorn polymer/MMA/water complex.
