Description

The applicability of the pore characterization by gas permeability (GP) was examined for celluloseacetate membranes prepared by micro-phase separation. The mean pore radii obtained from GP were compared with those by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and filtration rate method.<BR>For 4th mean radius r4>19 nm, GP is applicable to estimate ri (i=3 or 4) values, which agree with those obtained by SEM, but for r4<0.3 nm, GP gives erroneous results. Pore size distribution obtained from GP does not agree with that by SEM. The relation between the porosity obtained from the apparent density and that by SEM satisfies an equation derived theoretically for a spherical pore model. Since porosity value depends on the measuring method, r3 and (r3·r4) 1/2 obtained from GP varies with the porosity value.
