Description

Polysulfoxides and polysulfones were synthesized by the selective oxidation of aliphatic polysulfides with hydrogen peroxide as an oxidant. Generally, solubility of these polymers decreased in the following order: polysulfoxides>polysulfides>polysulfones. It is noteworthy that some polysulfoxides are soluble in water. The polysulfides and polysulfones are highly crystalline, whereas the polysulfoxides have low crystallinity. The polysulfides and polysulfones melt at around 100°C and at 250-300°C, respectively. The polysulfoxides decompose at about 230°C.
