Description

Hydroxymethylation of melamine with formaldehyde was investigated at 0°C by the use of aqueous buffers : [HCO31-] / [CO32-] =r=3/2 (pH 9.6) -1/9 (pH 10.7). This reaction was of general base catalysis, and the second order rate constant k given by the initial rate R0=k [melamine]0 [formaldehyde]0 was approximately given to be<BR>Here, k′ shows the rate constant in the unbuffered media, and A- is the basic constituent of the buffers. The relative contributions of the kA-and k′p-reactions were evaluated as a function of r by the use of the kA- and k′p values obtained.
