Description
To predict the water barrier property of nylon 6-clay hybrid (NCH), we have numerically analyzed the diffusion behavior of water in NCH using the finite element method (FEM) as a composite filled with plate particles. It was found that (i) the FEM analysis can be used to predict the diffusion coefficient quantitatively, (ii) the diffusion coefficient of NCH depends on the clay content, size, orientation and placement, and (iii) the water barrier property of NCH is mainly caused by the obstacle effect of oriented clay layers.
