Multi-functional pentaethylenehexamine was terminally bifunctionalized via the five-membered ring protection method. The bifunctionalized oligoamine was employed as a monomer in polycondensation reaction in order to examine some possibilities in application of the oligoethylenimine-incoporated polymers. First, introduction of the oligoamine units in the polymer main chain leads to chemical modification of nylon-6, 6 through terpolymerization of adipoyl dichloride with hexamethylenediamine and the protected oligoamine. The resulted copolyamides after deprotection were found to be water-soluble when the molar ratio of hexamethylenediamine to the protected oligoamine was lower than 0.5. Higher ratio yielded water-swellable polyamides. The second example was the chelate-forming property of the oligoethylenimine-incorporated polyamide. The property was proved by reacting a homopolyamide with K2PtCl4 to obtain water-soluble polymer-Pt (II) complexes. The third one was the biological test of the latter water-soluble Pt-complex, by which nontoxicity for mouse was shown. Further biological tests were also carried out to obtain basic information on its anti-cancer activity.
