Abstract

Diphenyl ether-modified phenolic resins were synthesized by the reaction of novolac with diphenyl ether in the presence of acid catalyst. p-Toluenesulfonic acid and boron trifluoride diphenolate were effective as catalyst for this reaction. The initial rate of diphenyl ether consumption was proportional to the amount of added catalyst. Apparent activation energies obtained were 23.5 kcal/mol for p-toluenesulfonic acid catalysed system and 4.8 kcal/mol for boron trifluoride diphenolate system. Infrared spectra of the obtained resins showed the structure containing diphenyl ether moiety in the novolac as a constituent. Stroke cure time for the resins mixed with hexamethyleneteramine became longer with the increase of diphenyl ether content, but they could be cured even at such a high diphenyl ether content as 59% with 10% hexamethylenetetramine.
